Subject: Demanding the Immediate Release of Walid Daqqah
Hello, I am writing to you because I am one of many people around the world that demand the immediate release of Walid Daqqah. Your organisation has a role and a responsibility to pressure the Israeli government and prison services to release Walid Daqqah, one of the oldest and longest-held Palestinian political prisoners. Palestinians and Palestinian civil society, such as Addameer and other organisations, are demanding immediate action. They point out that Amnesty International, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albenese must urgently pressure Israel for Daqqah’s release. I join them in urging you to take action. The continued medical neglect and imprisonment of Daqqah is immoral, and a flagrant violation of humanitarian obligations guaranteed under the Fourth Geneva Convention that enlist the rights of prisoners in occupied territories.
Daqqah has been imprisoned since 1986 — before the Berlin wall came down. He has been subjected to several documented instances of psychological and physical torture during his four decades of incarceration, including being placed in solitary confinement after publishing a children’s book on the occupation of Palestine, titled The Oil’s Secret Tale.
In 2015, Daqqah was diagnosed with leukemia. As of last year, his leukemia developed into myelofibrosis – a rare form of bone marrow cancer that disrupts the body’s normal production of blood cells. Throughout his imprisonment, Daqqah has faced severe medical negligence from Israeli prison authorities, including repeated delays in treatment and the denial of an urgent bone marrow transplant, all of which has led to serious deterioration in his condition and overall health. Earlier this year, he underwent surgery to remove part of his lung, after which he was placed in intensive care. He was transferred again to intensive care in May of this year due to his further deteriorating health, but authorities quickly transferred Daqqah back to his prison clinic, without allowing him time for proper treatment. The occupation is killing Walid Daqqah in an act of deliberate medical negligence.
Israel’s denial of necessary medical treatment to Walid Daqqah is an illegal practice regularly used to kill Palestinian prisoners. In December 2022, Israel killed Palestinian leader Nasser Abu Hamid in prison by refusing to provide the necessary medical treatment for his cancer. Just this May 2023, Palestinian leader Khader Adnan was also martyred in prison as a result of Israel’s deliberate medical negligence. It was recently announced on Monday 26th June that the Israeli condition release committee denied Daqqah’s request for early release. This only adds to the urgency of his case and the importance of this petition.Your organisation must help end this pattern of murdering imprisoned Palestinian leaders, before this becomes Daqqah’s fate.
I echo Daqqah’s family’s demands: the immediate release of Walid Daqqah from zionist prisons, that he receive urgent life-saving medical care, and that his family be granted visitation rights. I urge you to act immediately and persistently, and to work towards the release of Walid Daqqah.
