Millions for the Land and Right to Return
One Year Commemoration of the Great March of Return

Today, March 30, 2019, marks one year since the start of the Great March of Return in Gaza. On the 42nd commemoration of Land Day, Palestinians set up tents along the border that separates the besieged Gaza strip from historic Palestine, launching their march of return towards their ancestral land. Intended to last six weeks — between March 30 and the 70th anniversary of the Nakba on May 15 — the Great March of Return has persisted for one year as one of the largest popular mobilizations of Palestinians since the Second Intifada. On this day, we also commemorate our annual Land Day, which marks the killing of six Palestinians in 1976 during a general strike and protests against the Zionist government’s decision to expropriate Palestinian land.
Today marks one year of ongoing protest in Gaza against the colonization and occupation of our homeland; one year of marching for our Right to Return; one year of mourning our martyrs; one year of shouting our demands to the Zionist entity and the collaborationist Palestinian Authority. These demands include an end to the crippling blockade on Gaza, an end to the brutal bombardments of the Gaza strip, complete freedom of movement for the Palestinian people, and an end to the sanctions imposed by the Palestinian Authority. As Ahmed Abu Artema, the poet whose words inspired the actions once remarked, “The March of Return is a scream for life so that we may leave the walls of our prison.” We, the Palestinian Youth Movement, echo these demands today and everyday, and call on community globally and people of conscience everywhere to do the same.
Indeed, while the Great March of Return highlights the plight of Palestinian refugees over the past seven decades as well as Gaza’s current conditions under the Zionist siege of the past decade, it is not lost on us that the Palestinian Authority is also complicit. The Palestinian Authority has imposed sanctions on Gaza that have, in effect, exacerbated the Zionist siege. In 2017, the sanctions contributed to continued deteriorating material conditions, resulting in a 30% cut to wages for public servants in the Gaza Strip and forcing 13,000 people into early retirement. The sanctions by the Palestinian Authority uphold the Zionist siege on Gaza and facilitate the ongoing loss of life, land, and hope for Palestinian freedom.
Nevertheless, we refuse to lose sight of the colonial power that remains the ultimate source of our death and dispossession: Zionist forces have killed 274 and injured 15,292 Palestinians. They are our siblings in struggle. They are our mothers’ sons and daughters, our cousins, and our uncles. As we mourn our martyrs alongside our people in Gaza, we remain steadfast in the support of the Great March of Return.
In honor of the March’s first anniversary, the National Committee of the Great March of Return has called on the people of Gaza to march in millions on the borders of Gaza on March 30, 2019, under the banner of the “Millions for the Land and Right of Return.” The committee has also called on Palestinian people in other parts of occupied Palestine to organize demonstrations to show their support of the Great Return March. We, Palestinians in exile, join the Great March of Return and call on all our people to do so in unity, until we achieve full liberation and return!
Today, in the midst of escalated annihilation and destruction of Palestine, Gaza in particular, and the continued theft of land from Al-Khalil to the Golan Heights, we take to the streets in mass protest and we call on people of conscience to join us. We demand an end to the siege on Gaza and the Right of Return for the Palestinian refugees in Gaza, in Palestine, and globally, and an end to the ongoing Zionist aggression and colonization.
On this Land Day and the commemoration of the Great March of Return, we affirm: our land and people will be free!

ملايين من أجل الأرض وحق العودة
الذكرى السنوية الأولى لمسيرة العودة الكبرى

اليوم، 30 مارس 2019، يصادف عامًا واحدًا على بدء مسيرة العودة الكبرى في غزة. في الذكرى الثانية والأربعين ليوم الأرض، أقام الفلسطينيون خياماً على طول الحدود التي تفصل قطاع غزة المحاصرة عن فلسطين التاريخية، وبدأوا مسيرة العودة نحو أرض أجدادهم. استمرت مسيرة العودة الكبرى لمدة عام باعتبارها واحدة من أكبر المظاهرات الشعبية للفلسطينيين منذ الانتفاضة الثانية. في هذا اليوم، نحي أيضا بيوم الأرض السنوي، الذي يصادف مقتل ستة فلسطينيين في عام 1976 خلال إضراب عام واحتجاجات على قرار الحكومة الصهيونية بمصادرة الأراضي الفلسطينية.

اليوم، في خضم الإبادة المتصاعدة وتدمير فلسطين، غزة على وجه الخصوص، واستمرار سرقة الأرض من الخليل مرتفعات الجولان، نزحف إلى الشوارع في احتجاجات جماعية وندعو الجميع إلى الانضمام إلينا. نطالب بإنهاء الحصار المفروض على غزة وحق العودة للاجئين الفلسطينيين في غزة وفي فلسطين والعالم، ووضع حد للعدوان الصهيوني المستمر والاستعمار.
في يوم الأرض هذا وفي الذكرى السنوية الأولى لمسيرة العودة الكبرى، نؤكد أن أرضنا وشعبنا سيكونان أحرارا!
