Stompin' Up: Youth Resist Through Story and Dance
Join the Silk Road Dabke Troupe, Palestinian Youth Movement, and Aljuthoor for an evening of dance, stories, digital narratives and cultural resistance on Saturday May 14th in commemoration of the Nakba, "Catastrophe," where over 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes and land in 1948 in order to establish the state of Israel.
The Silk Road Dabke Troupe is group of high school aged youth from different national and religious backgrounds along the historical "Silk Road," who come together to dance the Dabke. Dabke is a traditional folk dance in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq that is today used as form of cultural resistance against colonization and erasure in Palestine, and elsewhere. Our youth performers will also debut videos and testimonials about their various experiences as immigrants and refugees in the U.S., challenging stereotypes, racist discourse, and xenophobia. Join us as we celebrate together in solidarity the resilience and persistence of our communities and youth to survive, thrive, live, and create together in community.

Gustavo Illescas is a Guatemalan journalist who began his career in the student movement at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala City. In 2012, Gustavo and other progressive journalists founded Centro de Medios Independientes (cmiguate.org) as an alternative, independent media platform to counteract the disinformation put out by the mainstream press and to oppose attacks and censorship against those working to defend their land, their livelihoods, and for human rights. In 2013, he began working as a political analyst for the respected human rights group CALDH, that represented the survivors in the national case of genocide against former-dictator Efraín Ríos Montt.
GABRIELA National Alliance of Women is a grassroots-based alliance of more than 200 organizations, institutions, desks and programs of women all over the Philippines seeking to wage a struggle for the liberation of all oppressed Filipino women and the rest of our people. While we vigorously campaign on women-specific issues such as women’s rights, gender discrimination, violence against women and women’s health and reproductive rights, GABRIELA is also at the forefront of national and international economic and political issues that affects women.
